A free public lecture sponsored by Liturgy Brisbane with staff from the Sydney Jewish Museum
Event details
Liturgy Brisbane invites you to join with us for a free lecture by visiting scholars from Sydney Jewish Museum, Dr Ari Lander and Dr Simon Holloway in the Francis Rush Centre, St Stephen’s Cathedral Precinct 19th February, 6.30pm for 7pm start, concluding at 8.30pm. Free parking is available from 6pm in the Cathedral car park (download directions). Ari and Simon will be presenting on, “YHWH: How is the God of the Israelites depicted in the Hebrew Bible?” In this conversation, Dr Simon Holloway and Dr Ari Lander will grapple with a variety of passages in sacred Jewish texts, and will discuss their differing relationships with this literature and with God. As two individuals whose attitudes towards Jewish text have evolved over time, their intention is to showcase the range of possible Jewish responses to sacred literature. About our presenters Dr Simon Holloway is an Education Officer at the Sydney Jewish Museum, where he runs seminars on Nazi racial science, Jewish resistance and the history of the Holocaust. Simon holds a PhD from the University of Sydney, for which he investigated the function of metaphors in the Hebrew Bible. His current research concerns the textual transmission of the early rabbinic literature and the use of humour in halakhic texts. Dr Ari Lander is an Education Officer at the Sydney Jewish Museum. He completed his doctorate on the history of the Zionist youth movements at the University of New South Wales. At UNSW he lectured and tutored for seven years on a variety of subjects including the Holocaust, comparative genocide studies, Zionism and Jewish history. Who should attend? This is an excellent opportunity for any reader, lector or homilist in the Archdiocese to hear about the Hebrew texts from Jewish people. The evening will conclude with a brief panel discussion connecting Simon and Ari’s presentation to the readings of Lent and Easter. Please RSVP using the form below by 15th February. This lecture is limited to 40 participants. |
